Remember When?

I love fall. Autumn colors, pumpkins, sweaters, Thanksgiving. All those things are nice, but, being a shallow kind of person, what I look forward to most is catching the new television line-up. I’m a self-confessed TV addict, and all summer I anticipate what exciting new shows are awaiting my discovery. I still remember the first episode of Friends. I sat on my brown futon, I wore a green turtleneck sweater, and I’m pretty sure I had a banana clip securing my long, blonde hair. And that show made me very, very happy.

That was before TV starting sucking. For the past few seasons shows have gotten progressively less interesting. I miss Friends and Frasier and Must-See-TV. I once looked forward to Thursday night. I realize it’s a little pathetic, but when we moved away from civilization I derived a lot of comfort from the fact that I could always depend on an evening with my “Friends” on specific nights of the week. I’d drink wine out of blue glasses with Monica and Rachael. I’d drink Cosmos right along with Carrie and Miranda.

But then everything good went off the air and some new phenomenon called Reality TV ruined everything.

So, what inspired this little rant? Well, I was flipping through stations tonight and caught two old episodes of Frasier. TV is so bad now I had forgotten how good it used to be. Not long ago there was good, old-fashioned romance on television. Shows like Friends, Cheers, Frasier—they all nailed sexual tension. I can’t think of any show right now that has such a charming storyline as Niles and Daphne. It was so funny and clever and well done—bittersweet. A good romance is always bittersweet right up until that moment when they kiss and succumb to their happily ever after. I want that on TV again. I don’t want Celebrity Duets.

Am I wrong? Am I missing something? Or is it true that TV just plain sucks?

Two words for you: Wentwork Miller. I don't watch reality TV, it annoys me. I do watch Prison Break, South Park, Drawn Together, Law & Order SVU, Medium and the occasional episode of The Simpsons, American Dad and Family Guy.

Yes, yes it is 3:36am and yes, I am still awake. I'm at a stand still with the writing. Now that they are no longer shagging like rabbits on E, I don't know what to do.

So I have two choices.
1. Be a wussy and not write and therefore not sleep.
2. Write and if it sucks ass, trash it later AND finally be able to sleep.

Hmmm...decisions, decisions.

I rarely watch TV anymore -- maybe this is why? I love the old shows you mentioned and I could go further back for other great series.

I pretty much avoid reality TV (well, except for American Idol, which makes people want to stick a fork in my eye -- but it's a show we watch as a family and we even vote, so there). :)

I do watch House. That's about it.

Aaah, yes, sexual tension on tv. I don't watch much tv anymore unless it's Court TV (I have a morbid fascination w/ forensics). Oh and the occasional Lifetime movie cos I write quite well when that crap is on.

Cheers had great sexual tension - so did Moonlighting, before it all went to hell. I remember being 16 and watching Moonlighting and thinking, "Oh, just do it! Don't do it! Do it!" And once they did it, it was done. Tension all gone...

Oh, yeah, I do watch Family Guy. Too funny for words.

Greatest use of sensual tension on TV - Phil of the Future on the Disney Channel.

I swear, I don't watch Disney regulaly, but I've caught this show a few times to be totally impressed by the "will they/won't they" tension between the 2 teenage kids.

It's amazing. And please notice that I said SENUSUAL not sexual - it's not gross or anything.

Emma, I'm sorry about the standstil, but you're an amazing writer soI know you'll get over it!

Ellen. AI doesn't count. ; ) Plus, isn't there sexual tension between Paula and Simon? I think so. And House is my definite exception. That's why I was flipping last night. I settled down to watch House but it wasn't on. Waaa.

Karen, mmm. Moonlighting. I've had a crush on Bruce Willis ever since. That was an amazing show, to.

Emma thanks for the tip on the show. Never heard of it.

There's no such thing as reality TV. It's all plotted, if not scripted.

Prison Break is great, but what about The Office? And I have to admit, I'm addicted to The OC. I can't wait for it to come back.

I miss Friends, too. Thursday's I'd go to Sarah's house, make dinner for her and her kids, read them a story while she did the dishes and then we'd watch Friends. It wasn't a show it was an event.

Amen Fiesty!!!

Apart from Ghost Whisperer on Fri. there is little I come out of my cave to watch anymore...So sad. Just MHO, but scripted, union card-carrying "real people" are so not interesting.

Now, that Wentworth Miller though...And so erudite as himself...Sigh...

LOL, Emma Sinclair! Phil of the Future, indeed! And Zoey 101. And Ned's Declassified... Teen shows have it all going on in the sexual tension department.

Lil, you said a mouthful! I can hardly stand to turn on the TV anymore -- my viewing is mostly collateral damage from the kids watching it. (see above) And I do like Smallville -- there's some decent sexual tension brewing between just about everyone. :D

Hmm. I just found out Fabio is going to be on America's Next Top Model tonight. That will give ME some sexual tension, if you know what I mean!

Man, the Frasier with Niles ironing his pants, then fainting? That one make me HOWL. Hold my sides, tears streaming down my face laughing.

Sex in the City was a favorite too. We watch Cheers reruns/ Frasier and M*A*S*H.

If I catch House, or Standoff I'm happy. I love Standoff (With Berger from Sex in the City?)But I'm not to punctual with the timing. If I catch it, yay. If not, that's what reruns are for.

Oh, BTW, You're tagged!
